Experience the thrill of hunting for your own fossils that have been nurtured by nature for millions of years! Join fellow fossil hunters in search of prehistoric marine treasures left behind by a once inland sea.
Join us on our ‘Digging @ Dawn’ tour which offers a journey through the discovery and reconstruction of Australia’s prehistoric past. Glimpse an insight into the science that breathes life back into the ‘real life monsters’ that once dominated the seas during Australia’s Early Cretaceous period.

HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE?
The full tour typically takes around 2 hours, although guests are welcome to stay longer at the fossil hunting sites if they wish. This will include a short 10 minute drive (in your own vehicle) and a brief site induction and discussion about the proper fossil collection techniques.
WHEN AND WHERE DOES THE TOUR LEAVE?
Digging at Dawn in 2023 will be running between April and October*. (*weather permitting)
The tours will be available every Wednesday and Friday during the season, with additional days during school holidays. Tours will start in the foyer of Kronosaurus Korner at 8:00 AM. These times will help avoid the heat of the day. Our guide will greet participants at Kronosaurus Korner and will help direct people to the Fossil Hunting Sites.
Kronosaurus Korner will provide guests with:
- Hand lenses – to look at fossils under magnification.
- Brushes – for removing dirt from hidden fossils.
- Superglue – to fix broken fossils that may otherwise deteriorate during transit.
- Geology hammers, crack hammers, chisels and pry bars – to break or separate layers of rock (for adults only).
(Note: Some of these tools are also available for purchase at the museum.)
